Devotions in the The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians series
Yes, God developed the Plan of Salvation to pay the price for man’s disobedience. He decided that the blood that Jesus shed would be used to restore His relationship with man.
It was God’s plan, developed out of His love for us. He designed it in His wisdom so that Jesus’ actions would replace Adam’s actions.
No, we don’t really know how or why that was acceptable. We just have to take it on faith that it was.
There are three concepts that we can look at so we can know enough to make a decision to follow God. The one we will address in this devotion is redemption.
Let's Put It into Context #1
Here is a running list of nuggets for the series.
Let's Put It into Context #2
“Because God’s children are human beings — made of flesh and blood — the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying” (Heb. 2: 14-15 NLT).
Jesus’ death and resurrection was the only way for us to gain salvation.
We know that the human side of Jesus would rather have found a different way. But Jesus completed the Plan of Salvation anyway. He laid down His life and took it up again for us.

Redemption is only available to us through the blood of Jesus Christ our Savior. Jesus’ blood completely redeemed us by paying the price for our sins.
Redemption is where God bestows His gift of grace on us in order to deliver us from sin.
- Grace is a free and unmerited gift of love from the Heavenly Father, given through His Son, Jesus Christ, that enables salvation and spiritual healing to believers by the work of the Holy Spirit.
- Sin is not believing that Jesus is our Savior to save us from our actions by humans that disobey God and break one of His reasonable, holy, and righteous laws and commandments, goes against a purpose He has for us, or follows Satan’s promptings.
- Holy means to be set apart — because of our devotion to God — to become perfect, and morally pure while possessing all virtues.
- Perfectionmeans we reach a state of maturity because the combination of the spiritual graces form, when all are present, spiritual wholeness or completeness — holy, sanctified, and righteous.
- Spiritual graces are worldly morals that have been submitted to God to further His kingdom instead of enhancing this world.
- Sanctified means to be set free from sin.
- Pure means not being sinful or having the stain of sin.
- Virtues are standards of moral excellence.
- Perfectionmeans we reach a state of maturity because the combination of the spiritual graces form, when all are present, spiritual wholeness or completeness — holy, sanctified, and righteous.
- Righteous means we are free from sin because we are following God’s moral laws.
- Holy means to be set apart — because of our devotion to God — to become perfect, and morally pure while possessing all virtues.
Glossary
Why was that exact time picked for Jesus to come down to earth to die? We don’t know. God knows.
We really don’t need to know. All we need to concern ourselves with is He did come, and He did die for us.
We do know that God developed the Plan of Salvation “… before the foundation of the world …” (Eph. 1: 4 ESV). Before man sinned. Before man was created. Before the world was created.
God knew what was going to happen. So, He put the plan in place so that He could forgive us and redeem us. That plan was the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ.
By the Blood
“In him we have redemption through his blood …” (Eph. 1: 7 NIV).
Through Jesus’ blood, we have redemption of our sins.
Redemption is where something is used in exchange for something else to gain or regain something. In this case, Jesus’ blood in used in exchange for our punishment for our sins.

- Righteous means we are free from sin because we are following God’s moral laws.
We — all who will accept the gift of salvation — receive a pardon when we believe and repent. We only receive this pardon when we ask for forgiveness of our sin. All of us have the opportunity for redemption, but only those who believe and repent will receive it.
Forgiveness is, when we ask, the act of God pardoning us because we have shown repentance for breaking His laws and commandments, which allows us to become holy as He is.
- Repentance is acknowledging our separation from God and expressing sorrow for breaking God’s laws and commandments by making the commitment to changing ourselves through obedience so that we no longer do the wrong things.
- Holy means to be set apart — because of our devotion to God — to become perfect, and morally pure while possessing all virtues.

Because of the Blood
Because Jesus shed His blood, we have received a pardon for our sins. What does this pardon cover?
We are delivered from the guilt of sin. Yes, we are sinners. Because Adam and Eve committed the original sin, they doomed mankind to be sinners.

Because of this, mankind thinks that sinning is normal. It is only after we have received Christ’s redemption does the guilt kick in, sometimes crippling us.
But when God has forgiven us, we are totally free from sin’s hold. We no longer have to fear death — spiritual death.

Yes, our bodies may die, but our souls never will when Jesus is our Savior. Yes, we may still have to suffer the consequences of sin (ours and Adam’s), but we do that with God as our protector.
Sometimes, we justify our sinful actions by saying we are not as bad as someone else. Sometimes, we say we are not guilty at all because we are kind and considerate of others and don’t do anything really bad. Maybe we think we’ve gone through enough self-help programs that we fixed ourselves already.
We don’t have to fix ourselves to earn the right of redemption. We couldn’t do it ourselves anyway.
We can come as we are to accept God’s gift. He will change us after we have accepted the gift of salvation.

We are delivered from the power of the devil. Satan no longer has free reign over our lives.
Yes, Satan will still try to tempt us to live and act differently than the way God has called us to live. But his power over us has been drastically reduced.
We are delivered from the captivity of sins. John 8: 36 says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (NIV).
We were trapped by Satan to sin and keep on sinning. That is until we admit that we have sinned, believe Jesus is our Redeemer, and confess that God is Sovereign.
The ABCDs of Salvation
If you have not become a believer in Christ, please read through the
Plan of Salvation and prayerfully consider what God is asking you to do.
A – admit our sins
B – believe His Son Jesus is our Redeemer
C – confess God as Sovereign Lord
D – demonstrate that commitment by making any changes needed in our lives to
live the way in which God has called us
The Disciple’s Job Description
Then we can break free from the cycle of sin. Is that hard sometimes? Yes. Our Heavenly Father is waiting to help us with that.
We are delivered from evil. The consequences of the original sin brought a lot of evil into the world.
Disease and death had not been a part of God’s original creation. We let that in as a punishment for sin.
Redemption has delivered us from the fear of those evils. No, we will still get sick. We may still die.
But we now have a Heavenly Father who will protect us and guide us through all of those things. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Ps. 23: 4 ESV).
We are released from the torment of sin. The curse is spiritual death. Jesus’ death has cleansed us because of His sacrifice.
Making the Connections
Jesus paid the price for our redemption by being born. But that didn’t activate the blood. He also had to die to do that. It took a while for the Plan of Salvation to be complete.
We’ve talked before about salvation being a process. Redemption is too.
Jesus redeemed us when we accepted the gift of salvation. However, we are still in the process of being redeemed as we try to align our lives more with God’s Will. We will only be fully redeemed when we get restored to the way God originally created us in heaven.
How Do We Apply This?
We need to read the scriptures to understand what Jesus did and why He chose to do it. At some point, we are just going to have to decide that we believe — even though we don’t understand it all.
We have to ABCD and the change our lifestyles to live for God. We have to consciously turn away from sin and try to live the lives to which God has called us.
This is the most important decision of our lives. It has eternal consequences. We don’t want to not make a decision or decide not to take God’s gift.
Father, we humbly approach You. We know how difficult it was to send Your Son to live on earth, knowing what was to come. We thank You that Jesus was willing to pay this huge cost to be our Redeemer. We admit our sin was the reason why Jesus has to come and shed His blood. We believe Jesus is Your Son and our Savior. We confess You as Sovereign God. We give You our lives. Help us to change what needs to be changed so that we may live in Your Will. We want to live our lives as if we were already home with You. Amen.
