Watchfulness is a continual conscious examination of ourselves and all events so that we may follow God in all things.

Watching for Jesus

  • We don’t know when Jesus is coming back — only that He is. Therefore, we have to watch and be ready (The Promises of Jesus’ Return).

  • Jesus has given us enough signs so that we should be prepared. We should be watching the eastern sky for our first glimpse of Him (Will Jesus Come in Secret?).

  • We are to watch and pray (Mt. 13: 25) (What Happens to the Antichrist?).

  • We are to watch for Jesus’ return, not knowing when that will be (Are Disciples to be Proactive or Reactive?).

  • The watchfulness has to be motivated by the love of the Lord. We have to want to be like Him (Stewards Who Are Ready).

  • We have to watch that we don’t get discouraged when Jesus doesn’t come when we think He should. Our charge was to watch until He came (Faithful and Unfaithful Stewards).

Other Things for which to Watch

  • We need to keep watch, so Satan doesn’t tempt us. We need to witness to others so they can know Jesus as their Savior (What Happens to the Antichrist?).
  • We have to keep close watch because Satan is sneaky. He is going to attack where we are most vulnerable and snow us. He isn’t going to show us his true self. He is going to be all appealing and charming (The Battle Between Flesh and Spirit).

  • Disciples must remain alert to keep on guard, so we don’t sin (Are Disciples to be Proactive or Reactive?).

  • Believers are called to watch the culture of the world in which we live. Culture is made up of a lot of things. Religion and values are a part of it. Language and marriage are included. Then add in food, clothing, music, and such. Then … there are a lot of other things thrown in. That is a lot of things to watch, more than we can do on our own (What Are the Patterns of the World?).

  • We have to watch not only for when Satan tries to tempt us, but also for our opportunities to serve and the blessings God gives us (Stewards Who Are Ready).

  • We have to watch the kind of company we are keeping (Watch the Company We Keep).

  • We also have to watch the words we use. God calls us to be different from the world, not using the same coarse language. I know. It is easy to let it slip in. We need to imitate God, instead (Will Disciples Have a Judgment Day?).

  • Paul gave us a couple of areas to make sure we watch. We shouldn’t be arrogant, quick-tempered, drunk, violent, and greedy (Expectations of a Steward).

  • But we are teachers as others watch us as we go about our lives. We may be the only Bible they ever read. Our homes may be the only churches they enter (What Is Religious Instruction?).
