The Prophecy of an Eternal Throne

If the Christ Child is a King, He should have a throne, right? This daily devotional looks at how the Christ Child will have a eternal throne.

Nuggets

  • The Messiah’s government will be one of eternal peace.
  • Jesus was a descendant of David’s from both sides.
  • Jesus may or may not be on a throne now; but He is sitting at God’s right side.
  • If Jesus isn’t on a throne now, He will get it soon enough.

Devotions in the Prophecy of the Christ Child series

In the last two devotions, we talked about the Christ Child being the King of kings and Lord of lords. When we think of kings, we think of thrones.

The Christ Child is assured a throne. Let’s look into it.

Let's Put It into Context

The Holman Bible Dictionary defines prophecy as “reception and declaration of a word from the Lord through a direct prompting of the Holy Spirit and the human instrument thereof.”

Resource

Prophecy is a divine revelation to mankind through the Holy Spirit of a future event. This was God telling us that we would be delivered.

The Prophesied Continuation of David’s Throne

“His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen” (Isa. 9: 7 N)

The Christ Child will have an eternal government. He will sit on the throne of His ancestor David.

Let’s get a brief snapshot of who Davis was. David was born in the City of Bethlehem. He was the youngest son of Jesse, who was the chieftain of the clan of Judah.

Anointed by Samuel, David went from shepherd to king. In all, David reigned 7 years in Hebron and 33 years in Jerusalem (1 Kgs. 2: 11; I Chron. 3: 4).

Person of Interest

Isaiah lived like 300 years after David. The Israelites would have known the promise God gave to David. “Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever” (II Sam. 7: 16 NIV).

Now, it isn’t talking about the chair here. It is talking about the Man in the chair.

The Messiah’s government will be one of peace. It won’t be small, and it won’t end soon.

This might be another passage that convinced the Israelites that they should be looking for a military Messiah. They were probably thinking of peace as opposed to war.

Biblical peace is totally different. Peace is a fruit of righteousness manifested in an inward tranquility resulting from a balanced life with spiritual order, equity, and truth that implies cooperation, humility, integrity, communication, and cohesiveness.

Peace, like everything else, stems from God. It comes to us through our relationships with Him.

Because the government of David’s descendant would never end, the peace will also be eternal. That is true because of God’s commitment.

Peace, like everything else, stems from God. It comes to us through our relationships with Him.

Prophecy Fulfilled by Jesus’ Birth

“and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah” (Mt. 1: 5-6 ESV)

It would have been standard operating procedure when Jesus was born to determine his ancestors by looking at His father’s ancestry. There was just one problem.

Jesus wasn’t Joseph’s biological Son.

No problem. Luke gave us Mary’s ancestry. “… the son of Nathan, the son of David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala” (Lk. 3: 31-32 ESV). [Don’t get weirded out by the different spelling of Boaz’s dad’s name. It is the same dude.)

The point is that Jesus was a descendant of David’s from both sides. It would have been important to the Jews that the Christ Child would be a descendant of King David.

Where Is Jesus Now?

“Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died — more than that, who was raised — who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us” (Rom. 8: 34 ESV)

Okay, technically, Romans 8: 34 doesn’t say Jesus is on a throne. It just says He is sitting at God’s right side.

However, we know two things.

  • “Who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him” (Pet. 3: 22 ESV)
  • “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me’” (Mt. 28: 18 ESV).

God is the source of authority and power. He has given that authority and power to Jesus.

If Jesus already has the power and authority, I doubt He is sitting there in a straight-back chair. Ferret wrote this: “Christ’s being at the right hand of God implies the sovereignty, power, and dominion with which He is invested.”

Resource

We have to remember that Jesus didn’t become our Savior so He could get a throne — He already was God’s Sin and Heir.

Jesus became our Savior because He couldn’t stand the thought of us not being in Heaven with Him.

Where Will Jesus Be?

“Then I saw a great white throne and one seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them. I also saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged according to their works by what was written in the books” (Rev. 20: 11-12 CSB)

Oh, yes. If Jesus isn’t on a throne now, He will get it soon enough.

Someone will be seated in the throne when it descends (Rev. 20: 11). We learn from Revelation 21: 5-6 that the Alpha and Omega is sitting in the throne. “Then the one seated on the throne said, ‘Look, I am making everything new.’ He also said, ‘Write, because these words are faithful and true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give to the thirsty from the spring of the water of life” (Rev. 21: 5-6 CSB).

Who is the Alpha and the Omega, you ask? Back in Revelation 1: 8, it is Jesus talking when He says, “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘the one who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty’” (CSB).

Jesus will rule throughout eternity.

Making the Connections

The Christ Child needs to be on our hearts’ throne. Jesus and salvation need to be top priority.

We have to give Jesus the honor that is due Him. He went through a lot for us. We need to acknowledge and appreciate what He has done for us.

Jesus is the Son of the Most High God. Yet, He willingly gave His life for us when He didn’t have to in order to do what we never could — save ourselves.

Only through Jesus shedding His blood to pay the penalty for our sins was God appeased after mankind sinned. He did that for us.

The King died for us.

How Do We Apply This?

The ABCDs of Salvation

If you have not become a believer in Christ, please read through the
Plan of Salvation and prayerfully consider what God is asking you to do.

A – admit our sins
B – believe His Son Jesus is our Redeemer
C – confess God as Sovereign Lord

D – demonstrate that commitment by making any changes needed in our lives to
live the way in which God has called us

The Disciple’s Job Description

We need to believe that Jesus is real, that He died to restore our relationship with God, and that He rose from the dead. We have to believe that He is coming again to judge us.

Jesus will judge us on one thing: have we made Him our Lord and Savior or not. We need to be ready when He comes.

He will be on His throne a long time. Where will we be?

Father God. We long for the day when Your Son is on His throne for eternity. Until that time, we will keep Him on the throne of our hearts, worshiping and praising Him. Amen.
