A Rainbow as a Moving Target

I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
Genesis 9: 13 (NIV)
Scripture: Genesis 9: 1-17

In the Old Testament, God created the rainbow as a promise to not flood the earth again. The rainbow is only one of the promises He has given us. This devotion will take a look at some of those other promises.

My son and I had gone to the library one night. While we were there, it started to rain. Well, let’s be honest. It started to pour.

Adam and I got wet getting back into the car, but it was a short-lived deluge. The sun was back out by the time we got to Alligator Bridge. Of course, this is Illinois — the sun was out, and it was still raining.

We talked about having to watch for a rainbow. Sure enough, I turned the corner, and there it was — a complete rainbow. Only we saw one end of the rainbow. It was in the field we were passing by. In all my forty-something years of life, I don’t ever remember seeing the end of the rainbow.

My son commented that there was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I had just been thinking, “I have set my bow in the sky as a promise.”

Then, as we watched, the rainbow moved with us! The end would always stay ahead of us.

Hello! Heaven to Ditzy Mom! God has given us some promises.

God has promised that He will never leave us. Deuteronomy 31: 8 says, “The Lord himself will lead you and be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you, so do not lose courage or be afraid” (GNT). Hebrews 13: 5 says, “… For God has said, ‘I will never leave you; I will never abandon you’” (GNT).

God has told us that He will take care of us. Wherever we go, He will be there ahead of us.

When things aren’t going the greatest, God will find a way to encourage us. He doesn’t want us to feel alone and helpless. He wants to be there for us, to guide us.

But a lot of times, we are so overwhelmed by our troubles that we don’t look for the rainbow – or whatever else God puts in our path to encourage us. We have tunnel vision and just see the problems.

God will come looking for us. “For thus says the Lord GOD, ‘Behold, I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out’” (Ezek. 34:11, ESV). He wants to keep us in the fold.

We need to stop focusing on the negative and remember God’s promises. Then we not only have to remember them but take them to heart. He meant them for us. They aren’t just some words written in a book thousands of years ago. They are relevant today.

Only then can God really work in our lives. “For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him” (Isa. 64:4, NKJV). I take that to read that only our loving God is the only One who will act for those who follow Him.

Isn’t it wonderful that God is always there? And that He will make sure that we see Him? He will keep the promises that He has made to us.

Loving Heavenly Father. Lord, we stand in awe. Just when we are at our lowest, You come to us and show Yourself to us. You encourage us. You remind us of the promises You have given to us. You show us that You do not send us down our paths without going before us. Thank you, Lord. Help us to keep focused on You during the storms of life. It is easy to focus on this life’s but help us to keep our focus on You. Amen.

What do you think? Why is it so hard to trust in God’s promises? What are some ways Satan uses to take our eyes of His promises? How can we grow to put our trust in Him? Leave me a comment below (on this or anything else) or head over to my Facebook group for some interactive discussion.
