Psalms are songs that were sung in worship. This daily devotional looks at how God sustains us in our struggles and trials.
I am continuing to do things a little differently while I am recovering. I’ve told you that Pastor Steve and I are doing a read-the-Bible-through program together.
I am sharing some of comments I’ve posted on what I’ve read. It may not be part of the At the Heart Level theme, but I will be able to keep providing you with something.
I am working on the first series for the At the Heart Level theme and plug it in when I can.
God Sustains
“I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me” (Ps. 3: 5 ESV)
The other day, I saw the meme about when Elijah was running away from Jezebel. God told him to sleep and eat.
David is about in the same boat. God answered his prayer the same way. Prayer is a two-way communication with God in which we pour out our soul to Him.
The sleep part at least. “… for the Lord sustained me” (Ps. 3: 5 ESV) could have been the eat part.
God knows the anxiety is going to come. He knows we aren’t going to handle it well.
He is still going to take care of us. He isn’t going to throw us to our Jezebel’s.
God is going to keep loving us.
We have to keep loving Him, even in the scary times. Focus, content, God is in control.
Father. You are stronger than anything Jezebel of this world. Help us to focus on You. Amen.
God Answers Prayers
“Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!” (Ps. 4:1 ESV)
David was praying to God in faith when he asked God to answer his prayers. Faith is a gift from God that enhances the conviction that the doctrines revealed in God’s Word are true, even if we do not understand all aspects of them, a belief which impacts our lives and distinguishes us from others.
How many times do we issue that statement as a demand?
Unfortunately, we aren’t just saying, “God, hear me when I pray.” We are saying, “Answer my prayer in what I ask, not in any other way.”
God isn’t a gum ball machine where we put our quarter prayer in and get the color of gum ball that we want. God knows what we need and answers accordingly.
We miss so many blessings when we try to limit God to our own understanding and wants.
We need to let God be God. He knows past, present, and future. He’s got this.
Father God. You are Sovereign God. Forgive us when we think we know more about our lives than You do. Thank You for loving us and providing for us. Amen.
The Understanding of God
“Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against you” (Ps. 5:10 ESV)
Yep. That is our downfall. We try to figure it out by ourselves. We follow our own advise.
Solomon said it another way. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Prov. 3:5-6 ESV).
God is omniscient. Omniscient means God is all-knowing.
We aren’t. We need to follow His directions, not make up our own.
Father God. We praise You for knowing all things. We are humbled that You know and love us. May we always follow You in all we do and think. Forgive us when we try to elevate ourselves into know what is right. Amen.
