Covetousness is an inordinate greed for wealth and possessions, constituting a mental gluttony.
- But this self-love and self-flattery turns into self-interest. We forget about God and come to depend on ourselves. The self-interest can turn into covetousness. When we covet something, we take our focus off God and put it on ourselves. It is a form of selfishness (The Difficult Last Days).
- We need to switch our focus away from desiring worldly possession to focus on God. We over value it (How Do We Switch Our Affections in Our Redo for Godliness?).
- Paul contended that covetousness was idolatry. If we put that much stock in our wealth and possessions, it generally has stolen our worship from God (How Do We Switch Our Affections in Our Redo for Godliness?).
- I think a good way of switching our affections back to God is seeing covetousness for what it is. It is a self-gratification where we lack moderation. It becomes a luxury and a tolerance. Moderation equals sobriety. Tolerance has slipped into the worldview definition of love in the attempt to get “… love your neighbor as yourself” to mean disciples have to allow sin to be accepted (How Do We Switch Our Affections in Our Redo for Godliness?).
- We want an excess of honor, but we get there by selfishness (How Do We Cleanse and Purify to Submit to God?).
